A senior-year Darwin High School video production project that demonstrates a variety of camera techniques including shots, angles, framing, movement, focus, white balance, composition, lighting and other experiments, as well as editing effects including animation, blue/green screen, keying, colour adjusting, cloning, slow-motion, image effects, transitions and sound editing.

Edited with Adobe Premiere Pro.
Filmed on a Canon MV800i MiniDV Handycam.

Songs are ‘Clocks’ and ‘Speed of Sound’ respectively by Coldplay.

How to Start a Career in Film or Video Production ?>?

Taking effective steps to the door of film and video production.

Steps -

Look for local production companies before jumping a plane to Hollywood. Production opportunities exist in every city.
Search the web with keywords "(your state), film/video production." Most states have a site dedicated to a local industry with links to company websites. i.e. [1]

Learn about the production companies, their projects, and current employees.

Figure out which department interests you most. i.e. editing, writing, cinematography, or producing
Find a specific person in the department you seek.

Call or e-mail about an internship. Express your interests and offer your skills, such as organization, flexible, etc.

Tips -

Have back-up abilities. Work can be dry at times. No need to get in financial trouble.

Aim for larger companies. The need for interns is often greater.

Learn several positions. Industry thrives on multi-skilled workers.

Keep at it. This is a tough, unpredictable business. If you love it, keep at it.

Knowing the right person gets you far. See "Warning."

Warnings –

Avoid film school. Unless you have money to throw around, I highly discourage this. Internships give hands-on experience and put you face to face with someone who will hire you.

My friend is going to school for video and film production. How much is he expected to make after this?

What kinds of jobs can he get? He has a previous business degree.
He told me he wants to be a producer. I’m clueless. What do just beginning producers do?

What does he plan to do afterward? Is he going to produce independently or go for a network job? Is he going to be an editor, cinematographer? There are too many unknown variables to answer your question accurately.

What is the approx. cost per 1 hour of raw film shot by a video production company?

- What would be the approx. cost per 1 hour of raw film shot by a video production company. The film could be about e.g. about a tourist attraction or a wedding ceremony. I realise the cost would depend on the location and size of the task, but could you try to give me best estimates and a range of costs.
- What would be the cost for 3 hours of raw film as above? What would be the cost of 5 hours?
- What would be the cost of editing this 1,3,5 hours of raw film into 1,3,10,60 minutes of video per 1,3,5 hours of raw film?
- What are the different types of video formats a company could produce the final edited film in? Would the cost be different based on the format? How much different for each format?

Too many questions and too little time, but I offer this:

Labor costs dominate these cost calculations and source format runs a close second. Make a production in NYC or LA or any other union location and initial costs go up. Use film instead of video and costs go up. Extensive post-production work (to correct screw ups or to make it oh-so-slick) will be extra. Experienced professionals will always cost more up front but can save tons of money in the final product – if managed properly.
